Department of Communication Arts

General Information

Mission

The Department of Communication Arts produces graduates that can ethically apply their skills, unique perspectives and Christian worldview to all media in order to further the communication discipline’s body of knowledge, while advancing the kingdom of God.

Vision

To become a leading university in communication studies, convergent media practice and scholarship developing the next generation of professional and vocational ministry leaders.

Strategic Emphasis

The Department of Communication Arts at NCU has placed a strategic emphasis on convergent and social media to achieve its vision of a renowned communication curriculum. Coursework ranges from fundamentals in human communication and theory, to practical courses in journalism, video production, web design, advertising, public relations and more. The result is a broadly integrated communication degree that enables graduates to seek communication and related careers in the widest possible range of industries and vocations.

Student Media

In the fall of 2009 The Northerner student newspaper expanded to an online interactive publication, reflecting a larger global trend in journalism and convergent media. By taking all student media online, The Northerner brand has been enlarged to offer more opportunities for students to showcase their talents in photography, audio, video and print. In addition, the new site offers an RSS feed and socially bookmarks every story students publish, allowing for a much broader audience. A digital paper version of The Northerner newspaper embedded on the site also allows people to page through a virtual copy of the latest issue with all of the color photography and layout in tact.
