NCU Magazine: Orfields

Summer brought many new looks to the North Central campus, some of which enhanced the appearance and functionality of the Orfield Apartments. Renovations included new windows, a fresh exterior paint job and new kitchen cabinets and countertops.

Funds for the Orfield renovations were raised at the annual Partners for Progress dinner, where donors contribute money for necessary campus projects. “It was a big enough need where it became the top of the priority list for Partners for Progress,” said Resident Director Kristin Fink.

Many of the Orfield windows were very old and not functioning properly. Many could not open or shut properly. Consequently, keeping the apartments' temperature appropriate to the season (whether cool in the summer or warm in the winter) was an issue.

Orfield exterior paint jobs were also on the list of repairs. The exterior paint now more closely reflects Phillipps Hall and carries a khaki color scheme, rather than the previous gray.

“It makes the [buildings] look newer, clean, and not as old,” said Orfield resident and senior intercultural studies major Angie Umeda.

The Orfields also received new kitchen cabinets and countertops. The new cabinets are wood-based, making them more durable than the previous cabinets. Also, unlike smaller old cabinets, the new cabinets reach to the ceiling, providing more storage for residents.
