MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference announced its players of the week for September 7 through 13 and sophomore golfer Dean Goodwin and junior Cross Country runner Daniel Bare have become the first two NCU athletes to receive the honor during the 2008 season.
Goodwin (Rosemount, Minn.) has been the most consistant and best player for the Rams Golf team in 2008, claiming match medalist honors in three of the five meets NCU has carded thus far. Goodwin claimed victories in a September 4 dual match verses Crown College (St. Bonifacius, Minn.), on Saturday verses Concordia University (St. Paul, Minn.), and most recently at the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Preview Meet on Saturday. Goodwin recorded a score of 75 for each of those matches.
Bare (Portage, Wis.) was also named the UMAC athlete of the week following his performance at the St. John's Invitational hosted by St. John's University (Collegeville, Minn.) on Friday night. Bare was the top male UMAC runner in that meet finishing 14th among college athletes with an NCU course record 27:40 on the rugged 8 kilometer course.
Bare and Goodwin become the first two NCU athletes in 2008 to be named UMAC athletes of the week. NCU has become an associate member of the UMAC in five individual sports including Men's & Women's Cross Country, Men's Golf, and Men's & Women's Tennis. As North Central finishes up the process of becoming a full member of NCAA Division III, the UMAC and NCU will look to continue their relationship with the Rams as full members of the conference. The UMAC sponsors 16 NCAA sports.
