Preventing Thefts from Dorm Rooms and Apartments

It can take as little as 20 seconds for a person with ill intent to walk into and out of an unlocked and open room with valuables such as computers, TV's, wallets, phones, etc. Here are some simple and quick valuable tips on how to protect yourself and your belongings in your dorm or apartment:

  • Lock your doors.

  • Develop a plan with roomate/suitemates to ensure your room is locked when no one is around.

  • Conceal your valuables. Remember "out of sight, out of mind."

  • Invest in a safe, which protects from fire and water, to store valuables such as your passport.

  • Invest in a lock kit for your devices (iPad, Laptop, Game Console, etc) and secure them to large pieces of furniture.

  • Report any suspicious activity to the North Central University Campus Safety and Security Department by calling 612.343.4444 or x4444 from any campus phone.
