Why Live Well?
Before I get into the nitty gritty of HOW to live well, I need to address the "why" of living well. Why choose to exercise when there seems already to be so little time in the day? Why choose to break an addiction to fast food? Why is nutrition important? I think most questions on wellness for Christians are wrapped up in the deeper question of,
"Why should I care for my body when I know that it is only temporary, aren't there more important things to care about?"
In the beginning thoughts of how to develop Recreation and Wellness on campus, we realized that we were going to have to address this question not only from a health perspective but also from a Theological perspective if we are going to convince the next generation of leaders that caring for our bodies is important. This thought has grown into what we call a Theology of Wellness. Theology is defined by Merriam Webster Dictionary as, "the study of religious faith, practice, and experience; especially : the study of God and of God's relation to the world."
God's original relation to the world was in the creation of all things, including humanity, and He proclaimed, "it is good!" Man fell, sin corrupts and in the midst of it all Jesus came to free us from the bondage of sin and death, Hallelujah! Yet, we still live here on earth, and we still struggle with sin. Our prayer is, "Your Kingdom come!" yet we live in the in-between time of Kingdom come, but not yet, and that brings me to the why.
We do not quit working to bring "Kingdom come" in our daily lives just because we are waiting for the return of Christ to bring Kingly reign. In the same way, we do not give up on our bodies just because we do not have the promised "new bodies" of Kingdom come. We believe the mind, soul and body are linked therefore we also believe our Creator wants us to be good stewards of our time, resources, relationships and bodies. When we care for our bodies by exercise, healthy nutrition, adequate sleep and maintaining stress and time, we function at our best. Good health gives us the energy we need to be God's hands and feet to a world that desperately needs to know and recognize the love of Christ in the church. To me this is the BEST reason why wellness is important.
