Writing Support

Writing Support

The ability to speak and write in a clear, organized, and effective way is a central part of the learning environment at North Central University.   The SSC, therefore, seeks to help students by offering services focused towards strengthen their writing skills.  Services are provided in a relational context by the academic support staff and tutors, with the focus of the process being ongoing improvement.

The following are some of the resources students may choose to utilize when working on a paper:

  • Assistance in overcoming writer’s block
  • Writing consultation and paper feedback
  • Formatting assistance
  • Crafting and layout

To access any of the above services, a student should schedule an appointment specifically mentioning the type of help he or she is looking for.  Papers should also be accompanied by the Writing Consultation Form which can be filled out when the student submits the paper and sets up an appointment.  Students should also be aware that the writing consultation program is not a pre-grading process, but is designed to find assist in improving the paper and the student’s writing.  Students who decide to use this service must also meet with the assigned writing tutor and go over the suggestions so learning may take place.

The Writing Consultation

All writers benefit from sharing their work with a reader, and a writing consultation allows you to do just that.  Writers often get too close to their own writing and are unable to create the distance needed for critical review. During a writing consultation, a tutor will go over the corrections/ recommendations to the draft with an objective eye, give you feedback on its strengths and weaknesses, and help you revise the areas which need rewriting. Your writing tutor will examine first the structural features of your draft: thesis, organization, and the development of your argument.  Your tutor also will identify errors in grammar, mechanics and style and work with you to revise these errors.  Because the time of the consultation is limited to one hour, your tutor will not go over every sentence and every mistake in spelling, usage, grammar, and style. Your tutor will, however, identify major or recurring errors and go over individual sentences containing such errors.  You are an active partner in the discussion; at no time does the tutor take over authorship of your writing.

When Should I Have a Writing Consultation?

You are welcome to come in for a consultation with any type of writing at any point in the process, from thinking about the topic to polishing a final draft. You may choose to meet with a tutor to

  • Clarify your ideas
  • Develop a thesis
  • Organize your argument
  • Strengthen specific paragraphs or sentences
  • Revise a paper after grading

The Paper is Yours

Even though you meet with a writing tutor, you remain responsible for everything in your paper. As the author, you decide whether to accept or reject the advice you receive.
