Susie Brooks

Susie travelled a long way to get to North Central. Originally from Kenya, she spent her undergraduate years in England and the Netherlands. As part of the requirements for her undergraduate work, she completed an exchange study program at the University of Akron in Ohio and then an internship in Anchorage, Alaska.

The company in Alaska offered her a position as Marketing Analyst, which she accepted and returned to the US as a professional upon graduation. Following her heart, she found herself in Minnesota in January 1999 but a few months into her time in Minnesota, she discovered that her heart was not really in the corporate world. She considered returning home to Kenya, but after prayer and fasting, it became evident that the Lord wanted her here. It was later that year that she began a career in higher education.

Susie played a key role in developing the Doctoral and MBA programs at Bethel University. In addition, she designed a course in Kenyan Culture as an option for students to fulfil the cultural diversity requirement. Starting with 21 students the first year, she had to put a cap on the number of students allowed when enrollment in the course reached 35 by the third year. This popularity of the course energized her passion for teaching, but following her appointment to Northwestern College, she chose to end the course offering at Bethel after 6 fruitful years. In addition to her designing the Kenyan Culture course, Susie's curriculum design extends to other areas such as Information Technology and Applications designed for non-technical undergraduate students in finance, accounting, business management, information systems and the liberal arts who will find knowledge of information systems and technology vital for professional success'; graduate level Information Technology and Applications designed for nursing home administrators; Instructional Foundation Lab for education majors seeking to fulfill requirements to develop skills in the use of technology as an instructional tool;  and Africans and African Americans, a course exploring Africans and African Americans in the United States, their history, culture, and identity. The course focuses on African immigrants in the United States and African Americans who have never lived in Africa, their similarities and differences, complexities around ethnicity as defined by both groups and social issues while enhancing understanding of the two cultures.  

Susie is also the founder of a newly formed Classical Christian elementary school, Veritas Academy (www.veritasclassical.org). And in 2006, she also founded 6th Day Creations Ministries, an organization with a mission to empower women of color to become all they are created to be. Susie is the proud wife of North Central alumni Steven, and mother to 9 year old son Seraiah.
