Attempted Robbery with Weapon (close to campus)

Monday, May 4th, 2009

On 5/2/2009 at approximately 10:00pm three individuals confronted a person (non-NCU constituent) on 11th Ave. At gunpoint, the individuals demanded the victim's purse. The victim screamed, at which point the attackers ran away, without the purse. The incident was reported to the Minneapolis Police Department by the individual.

Safety tips on protecting yourself:

Obtain an escort by the Security Department and always walk in groups of three or more.

Remember that you are in a city and the risk of incidents increase between dusk and dawn.

Go with your underlying feelings. If you are perceiving a potential situation try to remove yourself as quickly as possible.

If held at gunpoint, cooperate as much as possible unless cooperating would place you in greater harm. Do not go with an assailant to another location.

Be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you feel uneasy, immediately proceed to a more populated area.

If you are assaulted in any way, be aware of your assailants. Look at their clothing and face, listen to their voice, notice anything about their demeanor that will assist you in later identifying them.

Non-students enter building - involved in burglary

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

On 4/14/2009 at approximately 7:04pm  four Somalian male youth were let into Phillipps Hall. These individuals made their way through Phillipps Hall Clay Commons, Classrooms and some 2nd floor dorm rooms. Items were stolen from Clay Commons and dorm rooms. The individuals left Phillipps Hall at approximately 7:16pm.

This incident may have been prevented if some precautionary measures had been followed:

Do not grant access to buildings to people you do not know or that are not wearing a North Central ID card.

Direct any guests or unknown individuals to the front door of Miller Hall to contact the Security Office. Do not allow unknown individuals to walk through the building.

If you see anyone on-campus that you feel is suspicious please contact the Security Office.

Treat your dorm room like an apartment; lock your door.

Do not feel bad denying people access to a building. Simply direct them to the Security Office. If they really are a guest Security is able to provide them with the items that they will need while visiting campus, such as a map or a parking permit. If they are not a legitimate guest directing them to the Security Office will often serve as a deterrent.

If you have any questions or concerns about guests or individuals on campus please contact the Security Office at 612.343.4445.

Campus Safety

University polices exist to provide a basis for quality campus life and for setting a standard for all members of the community conducive to achieving the objectives of the University. This page contains excerpts from university policies as they relate to issues of safety and security. For your safety and the safety of others, please read and become familiar with these polices.

The following statistics, provided in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, are for your information. Security calculates the statistics on a calendar year basis and includes crimes/arrests that occurred on the campus of North Central University, property owned/controlled by students or student organizations recognized by the university, and on public property adjacent to our property used on a regular basis by North Central. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Security Department at 612.343.4445.

Points to Consider

There are problems with using crime data alone to judge if a certain address is a good place to live. Please consider the following:

  • Comparing raw numbers of crimes in two areas to decide which is more safer is difficult. The same number of incidents means different things in different areas. Some neighborhoods, such as those near downtown, have many people moving through them every day. Other neighborhoods have relatively few people in them during the day. Three daytime assaults in a quiet, outlying neighborhood might be a major crime problem; three daytime assaults near downtown might by typical or even low. This makes it difficult to compare areas just on the number of crimes.
  • No one can predict solely on the basis of past data exactly where crime will occur in the future. This makes it difficult to choose a house or a block that will always be “safe.”
  • People do not always report crime to the police - as much as 50 percent of some types of crime may go unreported. Some people do not report crimes they consider "minor," and that is an individual decision. Historically, some groups of people have been more likely to report crime to the police than other groups.
  • People are often most afraid of crimes committed by strangers. However, friends, acquaintances, and family members commit many crimes. Both stranger and non-stranger crimes are included in most of the data we provide to you.
  • Occasionally, programming or human errors cause crimes to be placed at the wrong location on maps.
  • Most importantly, many things that may make you feel unsafe do not get included in crime statistics. Everyone is different. You may feel uncomfortable in places with poor lighting or where there is a lot of noise, or where people hang out on street corners and ask for money. None of this shows up in our crime data.
  • What feels "safe" is different for each person. It is important to trust your instincts. Instead of relying on numbers of crimes reported, we suggest you do the following to determine if your new home will feel safe for you.

Crimes Reported by North Central University and by Other Law Enforcement Agencies

This chart includes offenses that were reported to law enforcement agencies other than the University Security Department and from any official of the University who has significant responsibilities for student and campus activities. These offenses are compiled in accordance with the provisions of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.

* On Campus data includes data from the Residence Building category.

°Incident occurred in a newly acquired apartment
building between non-student occupants remaining in the building under the old
lease.

…In the 2007 crime data there is a significant increase the “Burglary” crimes. Security has evidence that the same individual was involved in the burglary of 14 dorm rooms at different times. Legal action was taken against this person. After legal action was taken, no further burglaries were reported that semester.
