Equivalency Requirements for General Courses

For your convenience we have listed the specific requirements (for only the general education courses) which make a course equivalent to one at NCU. If you have any questions regarding more specific courses in your major please call the Transfer Student Counselor.

Public Speaking COMM 220 (2 credits)

  • Must include the student giving three public speeches.
  • Cannot be Interpersonal Communications, unless the course also includes writing, preparing & delivering public speeches.
  • A course syllabus may be necessary if there is question.

Fine Arts (2 credits)

  • FA 111, Music Appreciation will have various titles such as Music History, Intro to Music Literature, Survey of Music Literature, Intro to Jazz, Music: The Classical Era.
  • The course must consist of the history of music, studying the different time periods and styles of music; not about musical notes or playing an instrument.
  • Music majors must take Music Appreciation for Majors at NCU.
  • What will not transfer: Piano lessons, Choir, Music Theory, Fundamentals of Music, Conducting I.
  • FA 112, Art Appreciation will have various titles such as Survey of Art History, Intro to Art, 19th Century Art.
  • The course must consist of the history of art; may also include appreciating styles of Art, sculptures and paintings; studying famous artists and their paintings & attending Art museums.
  • What will not transfer: Drawing I, Painting I, Intro to Ceramics, Art in the Elementary Classroom.
  • FA 250, Intro to Theatre will have various titles such as Theatre Appreciation, Theatre as an Art.
  • The course must consist of the history of theatre studying famous playwrights.
  • What will not transfer: Acting I, Theatre: Theory and Practice, Intro to Playwrighting.

Foundations of Leadership GS 180 (1 credit)

  • A leadership courses will transfer in place of GS 180 if the course was taken from a private college that teaches servant leadership & students were required to be involved in service opportunities.
  • What will not transfer: Freshman Orientation, First Year Symposium.
  • Courses should be approved by the Dean of Community Life.

Global Perspectives ICS 111 (3 credits)

  • This course focuses on missions and developing a broader Christian worldview.
  • This courses must be taken at a Christian college; a course from a secular institution will not transfer as ICS 111.
  • Examples: Intro to Missions.

History (3 credits)

  • Any History course is transferable, unless a student is pursuing Elementary Education; in that case American History is required.
  • Examples: World History, American History since 1865, Minnesota History, Chinese History, History of Western Civilization.
  • What will not transfer: Church History, but could transfer as HIST 311 or 312 for ministry majors.

College Rhetoric and Research ENG 124 (3 credits)

  • The course must include a large (8-10 page) research paper, critical reading and writing and learning the research process.
  • Must be a 100 level course or higher.
  • Examples: Composition II, English II, Research Writing.
  • What will not transfer: Composition I, Freshman English, Essay Writing -- these courses usually consist of essay writing, paragraph structure and grammar and may include the introduction of research writing, but not a large research paper.
  • It is important to review course descriptions; it may even be necessary to review a course syllabus.

English Electives (2 courses, 6 credits total)

  • The course(s) must be higher than ENG 124, preferably a 200 level or above.
  • Examples: Intro to Literature, American Literature, British Literature, Creative Writing, Intro to Poetry, Intro to the Novel, Shakespeare, Milton, Major Authors.
  • What will not transfer: Children's Literature or Adolescent Literature (Children's Literature is only a required course for Elementary Ed. majors in the core).

Physical Education (2 credits)

  • 1 of the 2 credits required must be an activity course; both can be activity related.
  • Examples: Aerobics, Bowling, Weight Training, Ballet, Swimming, Basketball, Karate, Archery, Rock Climbing.
  • Normally PE courses are worth 1 credit; if one activity course is worth 2 credits, it meets the PE requirement.
  • 1 of the 2 credits can be Health, First Aid, Nutrition, CPR (normally these courses are 2-3 credits each, but only 1 credit can transfer as a PE requirement)

Math (3 credits)

  • The course will include the math and algebra necessary to understand story problems, consumer math and the basic laws of science; includes polynomials, story problems involving linear and quadratic equations and factoring.
  • Must be a 100 level course or higher.
  • Examples: College Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, Finite Math, Statistics, Calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry (courses above the College Math & Algebra level are also accepted).
  • What will not transfer: Math for Elementary School Teachers, Math for the Liberal Arts, Developmental Math.

Science (3 credits)

  • Any Science course taken with a LAB is transferable, unless a student is pursuing Elementary Education; in that case Physical Science at NCU is required, which covers the requirements for licensing in Minnesota.
  • Examples: Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, Anatomy, Chemistry
  • What will not transfer: Any science course without a lab.
  • Science is not transferable for Elementary Ed. majors unless Chemistry, Physical Science and Astronomy were taken (all 3 courses would transfer in place of Physical Science at NCU).

Critical Thought (3 credits)

  • Examples: Intro to Philosophy, Ethics, Logic, History of Western Philosophy, Eastern Philosophy.
  • What will not transfer: Philosophy of Religion, World Religions, Ethics in the Professions, Christian Thought.

General Psychology PSYC 125 (3 credits)

  • This is an introductory course which should include development, heredity, environment, personality, motivation, emotion, stress and adjustments, sensation and perception, theory, psychological measurement and psychotherapy.
  • Examples: Introductory Psychology, General Psychology.
  • What will not transfer: Psychology of Adjustment, Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology.

Intro to Sociology PSYC 126 (3 credits)

  • This is an introductory course which includes a study of the nature of the human group; the formation of personality; the role of culture in behavior; the meaning of racial differences; the functions of the family, church, school and state; and the ways society changes and grows.
  • This course is required for Youth Development Studies majors.
  • Examples: Introductory Sociology, Intro to Sociology.
  • What will not transfer: Social Problems, Urban Sociology, Social Psychology.

Cultural Anthropology ICS 112 (3 credits)

  • This course should include the basic concepts of cultural anthropology and the diversities of human culture.
  • Any basic Anthropology course will transfer.
  • This course is required for Intercultural Studies majors.
  • Examples: Intro to Cultural Anthropology, Anthropology: People & Cultures, Culture & Society.
  • What will not transfer: An anthropology course that gives an overview of such topics as archaeology, cultural anthropology and human evolution.

Old and New Testament History and Literature BIBL 126 (3 credits) & BIBL 127 (3 credits)

  • The course(s) must cover the entire Old or New Testament from a historical viewpoint.
  • Can be taken at a secular institution.

Bible Study Methods BIBL 229 (3 credits)

  • The course must include learning various methods of studying the Bible.
  • Emphasis is on practical application; a large exegesis paper is required.
  • See Charlie McElveen for approval of this course.

Spiritual Formation BIBL 131 (3 credits)

  • The course must include the importance of a devotional life, prayer and evangelism.
  • Can be taken at any Christian institution.

Systematic Theology I THEO 114 (3 credits)

  • The course must include Assemblies of God theology & the 16 Tenets of Faith.
  • Can be taken at an Assembly of God school or Pentecostal school.
  • What will not transfer: An Intro to Theology course that does not include AG theology.

Systematic Theology III THEO 355 (3 credits)

This course must include Soteriology and Christology, as well as regeneration, justification, sanctification and adoption
