NCU SIFE Team Captures Regional Championship
Minneapolis, MN – North Central University’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team was named Regional Champion March 22, 2010. NCU SIFE competed in the North Central Region along with other universities from across The Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin. NCU SIFE presenters Daniel Bare, Breeanna Martinez, John-Meritte Jones, Joel Balsar, Katie Olson, and Nathan Ragsdale all played significant roles in capturing the university's first ever regional title.
SIFE is a program that provides a diverse network of university students, academic professionals and industry leaders. The mission is to create a better, more sustainable world through the positive power of business. Participating students form teams on their university campuses and apply business concepts to develop educational outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need. Many donor companies such as Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, and Walgreens come to recruit SIFE students for internships and job opportunities.
During regionals each SIFE team constructs a 24 minute presentation of the results of their various projects from the past year to panels of business leaders. Teams are judged on their ability to impact their target audience based on the events/projects that they have created.
The NCU SIFE team presented the results of their projects/events in the form of impact that it had on their audience. One of the events motioned, “Project SOS” taught students information about credit - credit cards, credit score, etc. The workshop began by testing students' knowledge of the subject with a quiz before the workshop. They then taught the information, and then measured how much they learned with another quiz at the end by testing the same information. The increase in score was the increase in knowledge about credit, and thus the impact on the audience.

The mission of NCU SIFE is to promote free enterprise and social responsibility by combining Christian standards of leadership and integrity with business and professional skills to develop initiatives that benefit both the community and world.
“SIFE is an incredible opportunity for students of all majors to apply what they’re learning in the classroom to a real-world scenario," said Business Administration faculty member William Tibbetts. "Plus, as Believers, it’s another opportunity for us to have an impact in our world for the kingdom.”
NCU SIFE developed 6 projects and 7 events, with 3 new events planned for this semester. Some of those developed include the previously mentioned Project SOS Financial Literacy Series, the InterviewME resume and interview skills workshop for Ministry majors, various networking opportunities for Business majors, as well as a Small Business and Entrepreneurship Conference for immigrant small business owners established around the Elliot Park Neighborhood.
Next up for the NCU SIFE Team is the National Exposition May 11-13, 2010. The team won’t have to travel far though, this year’s competition is being held in NCU’s backyard, Minneapolis, MN.
