NCU Athletics Gains Full Membership in UMAC
MINNEAPOLIS, MN - North Central University Athletics and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference are pleased to announce that NCU has been granted full membership status within the conference. The UMAC Council of Presidents unanimously voted to accept North Central as full members in last week's spring conference meeting held at Northwestern College in St. Paul.
North Central enjoyed an associate membership in the UMAC since 2008. At that time the Rams were granted the opportunity to compete in Men's Golf, Men's & Women's Cross Country, Men's & Women's Tennis and Men's & Women's Outdoor Track & Field.
In the fall of 2012 the UMAC and North Central agreed to have all of the Rams varsity sports compete in a full conference schedule and compete for league championships and post season award recognition. The associate membership was to continue throughout 2012-13 with the conference then voting in their spring meetings on whether to accept North Central as full members going forward.
Last week the UMAC conducted that spring meeting where the Presidents Council unanimously voted to accept North Central as full members. The vote was effective immediately giving North Central the same membership privileges as the other seven league members.
Rams athletes have a long history of friendly competition against many of the current members of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. This competitive lineage dates back to the infancy of all 16 NCU varsity sports and spans the last four decades. Now as members of the same league as many of these historically connected programs, Rams athletes will enjoy the benefit of consistent travel schedules, additional post-season opportunities and the camaraderie that comes with membership in a collegiate athletics conference.
"We are excited to receive this opportunity to join the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Conference membership offers our student athletes many benefits that will improve their experience." Said North Central Athletics Director Jon High.
North Central Athletics is a growing department and this new phase of growth will be a key element in the future. A conference membership will also provide NCU a opportunity to experience the best NCAA Division III athletics has to offer.
"From the day to day travel schedules to additional post-season competition and award recognition opportunities we feel very positively about UMAC membership. It will also challenge us competitively and allow us to set sights on future growth in all of our sports programs. We feel that being associated with these like-minded institutions will allow the NCU Athletics experience to grow into a true NCAA Division III experience as well."
The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference is a now an eight team league composed of NCAA Divison III institutions in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The UMAC champion has automatic NCAA Division III national tournament berths in Football, Men's & Women's Soccer, Men's Golf, Women's Volleyball, Men's & Women's Basketball, Baseball and Softball.
