At least 12 other colleges and universities have followed suit since the June 4 announcement<\/em><\/p>\n

At the Minneapolis memorial service for Mr. George Floyd on June 4, North Central University President Scott Hagan, Ph.D., announced the formation of the George Floyd Memorial Scholarship to contribute toward the educational promise of aspiring young black American leaders.<\/p>\n

After announcing the scholarship, Hagan said, \u201cFar beyond North Central University, I am now challenging every university president in the United States of America to establish your own George Floyd Memorial Scholarship Fund, so people across this nation can give to the college of their choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bold invitation was received with a standing ovation from those present at the service held in the Lindquist Sanctuary at North Central University in downtown Minneapolis. Before announcing the scholarship, Hagan said commitments of $53,000 had already been made, unsolicited, toward North Central\u2019s new scholarship fund. Since June 4 when Hagan\u2019s challenge was given at the memorial service, at least 12 colleges and universities, including Ohio University, Alabama State, and Missouri State, have established their own George Floyd Memorial Scholarships.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is time to invest like never before in a new generation of young black Americans who are poised and ready to take leadership in our nation. So, university presidents, let\u2019s step up together,\u201d added Hagan.<\/p>\n

North Central University was asked by representatives of Mr. Floyd\u2019s family to host the memorial service. Hagan, who gave the introductory prayer, said the university was honored to hold the event on its campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is truly an undeserved honor for our university,\u201d Hagan said to the family. \u201cI\u2019ve been praying all week that this sacred space would become a table of healing for the Floyd family, the City of Minneapolis, and the world that is grieving beyond these walls.\u201d<\/p>\n
