Position Purpose

The Admissions Counselor recruits and coordinates university efforts to enroll qualified new students and assists in coordinating student services efforts throughout the campus. This position requires the ability to travel 25% of the time.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

(25%) Represent North Central in various capacities outside of the University for the purpose of recruitment. 

  • Travel to represent the University at High Schools, Churches, College Fairs, AG Youth Conventions, and other youth events
  • Assist in the strategic selections of which fairs, conventions, and other events to attend
  • Visit church youth groups and youth retreats to meet with prospective students
  • Develop relationships with guidance counselors, youth pastors, youth leaders, and other key figures who play a role in influencing potential students on their choice of school.
  • Assist in training and equipping students who travel and represent the University through our office
  • Make individual appointments to visit the prospective students and their families while traveling in their area
  • Provide preparing for college and financial aid presentations at high schools and churches
  • Represent the admissions office when outside groups use our facilities

 (40%) Student Communication & Financial Aid Counseling

  • Coordinate and manage your communication plan for each student
  • Meet weekly goals for call, email, text, and visit numbers
  • Communicate with new self-initiated inquiries, follow up with recent visitors, call and email students who have submitted an application or any application documents
  • Build relationships with admitted, deposited, and enrolled students
  • Walk through financial aid awarding conversations with each student who is awarded
  • Develop a relationship with the Registrar, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, and Housing Offices to ensure there is an efficient flow of information about the students entire registration process to serve our students effectively
  • Call applicants who have been in “Application Started” or “Application Submitted” stages to determine if they will be completing their application and assist them with anything that will help them complete it
  • Provide financial counseling and follow up during move in day and welcome week
  • During specific seasons admissions counselors are expected to work a late night each week

(25%) Coordinate campus visit experiences to ensure prospective students and their families have a positive experience while visiting North Central

  • Host visiting students and families for individual campus visits by answering questions regarding academics, campus life, spiritual life, financial aid, the opportunities of living in Minneapolis and any other area guests would like to discuss
  • Conduct an informational campus tour and provide directions around the Twin Cities for guests
  • Working with the Campus Visit Coordinator, you should help facilitate opportunities for the prospective student to attend chapel, classes, the cafeteria, meet with a professor or coach, audition for a music scholarship, or participate in other special interests a student has
  • Represent NCU in a professional and friendly manner
  • Be available for unplanned “walk-in” campus visitor
  • Be aware of events on campus and in our community that can benefit our guests.
  • Correspond using phone, e-mail, and Facebook with accepted applicants prior to their arrival on campus regarding class registration, housing and financial aid.
  • Assist with Friday Preview Days, NCU Days, and other group visit events for prospective students.

(10%) Review Applications for Admissions and make Acceptance Decisions

  • Read the complete application form, review transcripts and test scores, and evaluate accuracy of data within the information system to determine the student’s eligibility to be admitted to NCU.
  • Make phone calls to the applicant, reference, or school as needed to clarify information and gather missing data regarding standards of conduct in applicant’s spiritual and academic life.
  • Determine if the applicant meets the published admissions requirements
  • Grant acceptance to applicants who meet the admissions criteria
  • Present questionable applications for admission to the Executive Director of Admissions and the Admissions Committee
  • Review accepted applicant files for academic scholarships.
  • Award scholarships and inform accepted student during initial acceptance call.

Job Qualifications

Minimum Education and experience

  • A bachelor’s degree is required
  • Counselor must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and be willing to live within the lifestyle statement of the University.
  • Previous sales and/or customer service experience
  • Bilingual Spanish skills preferred
  • Position requires overnight travel
  • Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends
  • Must be comfortable with public speaking
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and excellent driving record
  • Desire to be in the position for 2+ years

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Excellent communication skills, both one –on- one and in front of larger groups
  • Has an understanding of North Central community, including the spiritual atmosphere, campus living, organizations and ministries, majors and curriculum and the opportunities of the Twin Cities area
  • Thoroughly understands the admissions strategy and procedures
  • Knowledgeable about university policies in the areas of housing, financial aid, parking and academic programs
  • Ability to be self-motivated and self-managed to meet deadlines
  • Ability to lead and direct various projects
  • Posses effective leadership and managerial skills to oversee student volunteers
  • Ability to travel while maintaining office duties
  • Work involves collaboration with a team of other admissions personnel in an office setting
  • Requires working independently in a fast-paced environment and adapting to a variety of roles with multiple demands

Working conditions and frequency

Environmental Conditions

  • Position involves exposure to repetitive motion of the fingers, hands, and wrists on a daily basis.
  • Position involves long periods of time walking (tours), standing (presenting), and sitting (desk work)
  • Work environment involves working in an urban, Christ-centered community

Equipment and Tools

  • Use of a PC, photocopier, fax machine, and telephone—approximately 70% of the time
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs
