Why you should attend a Christian college

Some people might claim that it doesn’t matter whether you attend a secular college or a Christian college. That is simply not true.

If you hold Christian beliefs and are planning to go to college, you will at some point in your college decision journey stand at a crossroads and be faced to make the choice. Should you attend a Christian college or a secular one?

Here are a few reasons that you may want to strongly consider attending a Christian university.

At a Christian college, you have shared values with your professors and the school.

Imagine sitting in class after class with teachers who are unwilling to see life from your perspective. They have no empathy for your worldview, which contrasts with their own. They require you to write papers, make presentations, answer test questions, in such a way that you must conceal your beliefs.

It doesn’t sound conducive to healthy learning, does it?

On a Christian college campus, you will attend classes that are opened in prayer by professors who care about your academic—and life—journey. These are faculty who will become your mentors for more than just grades.

And this doesn’t mean that you won’t be intellectually stimulated by your professors at a Christian university. You will also be challenged to learn about worldviews other than your own in a healthy environment. You will be encouraged to think and evaluate in new and different ways.

In fact, most Christian colleges require you to take a core of biblical courses that will teach you not only about the Bible, but also about religion and worldviews overall.

Community on a Christian college campus is truly life-changing.

College is probably going to be hard for you. Everyone faces different challenges. Some students struggle academically. Some students struggle socially. Some students struggle spiritually.

The key to success then, is having a community of support around you throughout your college journey.

On a Christian college campus, your community is supportive in the deepest sense. Students pray for one another within their residence halls. Prayer requests are heard in chapel services. The student body gathers to sing to God in worship and song and to hear from faculty, staff, and leadership on a wide variety of topics.

The support that you find at a Christian university will help you through challenges that you face as a student. And it will help equip you with the skills and the Spiritual foundation that you need to excel after you graduate.

The research says Christian education is better.

Christian higher education contributes positively to our culture. A transcript of the speech, “The Cultural Value of Christian Higher Education,” given by David Brooks, was included in the most recent issue of the CCCU Advance (advance.cccu.org), a publication of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities. In his speech Brooks, a New York Times columnist, author, and Yale professor, contends that “Christian colleges can develop students in ways few other institutions can.”
