With Super Bowl LII now in the rearview mirror, downtown Minneapolis has calmed down and the North Central campus has returned to its normal rhythm for students, faculty, and staff.

But for 10 days, NCU became a busy hub of activity of a different sort as university facilities were used by law enforcement personnel to stage security operations for Super-Bowl-related activities throughout the week leading up to the big game. (See related story.)

NCU makes the news

The decision to schedule an additional winter break—due to the Super Bowl’s expected impact on downtown—caught the attention of KSTP TV early in January. Reporter Jessica Miles reached out to learn more about what that would mean for our students, faculty, and staff, and Channel 5 ran a story that aired Jan. 12.

The impact on our sports teams, who had to reschedule a few practices and games, was also included in an online article by Frank Rajkowski on Jan. 12.

On Jan. 25, when it was announced that North Central would serve as a staging area for Super Bowl-related law enforcement activities, KSTP News aired a segment featuring an interview with President Scott Hagan.

While the campus was under strict security protocol during the contracted use of NCU facilities for law enforcement, KSTP was granted access on Jan. 31 to learn about the security operations. KSTP reporter Farrah Fazal and photojournalist Lee Zweifelhofer gathered information for the story, which aired on Feb. 5, reporting some of the behind-the-scenes work that led to a safe Super Bowl experience for thousands of Minnesotans and visitors.
