Amidst Legislative Turmoil, NCU Remains Steadfast in Upholding Faith-Based PSEO Opportunities

The Minnesota Department of Education, in conjunction with the legislative branches, recently voted on an important matter. As part of the education budget, lawmakers introduced a provision that prohibits postsecondary institutions participating in the PSEO (Postsecondary Enrollment Options) program from utilizing a faith statement as a requirement during the application process. The provision emphasizes that eligible institutions must refrain from considering factors such as a student’s race, creed, ethnicity, disability, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or affiliations when making admission decisions.

North Central University is dedicated to its Christian foundations, culture, and community. We express profound disappointment regarding the recent decision by our state government to revoke NCU’s ability to receive state funding if we require PSEO students to affirm the university’s religious beliefs. These beliefs are essential to upholding our faith-based culture. Nevertheless, despite this setback, NCU unwaveringly maintains its commitment to admit and educate dual enrollment students within the framework of a Christian worldview.

Since its establishment in 1985, the PSEO program, administered by the Minnesota Department of Education, has provided high school students with a remarkable opportunity to enroll in college-level courses. Through PSEO, students have been able to earn both high school and college credits simultaneously, a form of education known as dual enrollment. This program has played a pivotal role in empowering students and their families by offering alternative pathways to higher education within their chosen Minnesota colleges, all while alleviating the financial burden of student debt.

At our institution, we deeply acknowledge the immense significance of our school’s distinct Christian identity to our students and the wider community we serve. Preserving and upholding this identity holds paramount importance to us.

North Central University fully intends to offer ongoing dual enrollment opportunities for Minnesota high school students for Fall 2023, independent of the government ruling, or status of an ongoing lawsuit regarding this amendment. In line with our commitment to faith-based education, we affirm that the faith statement will remain a part of our application process. This decision ensures the continuity of our distinct spiritual community and demonstrates the university’s unwavering dedication to providing Christ-focused education. We look forward to welcoming high school students into our vibrant academic environment and supporting their growth both academically and spiritually.

We wholeheartedly support the ongoing legal action against this law and actively stand behind those working towards positive outcomes. We humbly request the prayers of the wider Christian community for NCU and other institutions that share our beliefs. Above all, we ask for prayers for the affected families and students who are directly impacted by this amendment.

We sincerely appreciate your concern, support, and continued prayers.
