How to save for college during COVID-19

How to save for college during COVID-19

By now, you’ve probably heard it all from “we’re all in this together,” “these are uncertain times,” to “things are scary right now.” But what about planning for the future? Saving for college has certainly become more complicated due to the current state of our world and economy.

Learn four ways you can still save money for college during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Find a college that will work with you

Navigating the world of college finances can be a difficult and confusing task at times. Colleges like North Central University are more focused on the success of individual students and are there to help you enter and leave college in good financial standing.

From advising on potential scholarships, grants, or work-study programs, the Student Financial Services office is there to guide you. At NCU, our Student Financial Services team is here to answer any of your financial questions so you can accomplish your goals. They’ll even help you maximize your financial aid award. Resources like the Student Financial Services team are important to utilize before and during college to make sure you’re in command of your financial situation.

Most colleges offer convenient virtual meetings during this time, so there’s no need to leave home.

Especially during an unprecedented time like this, NCU is committed to helping students through financially tough times with grants, resources, and one-on-one advising.

Explore scholarship options

Looking for scholarships is a necessary (and time consuming) part of helping pay for college. While you’re busy visiting colleges (virtually), researching degree programs, and comparing different schools, it can be overwhelming to think about how you will pay for your time at a college or university. But taking time to search for scholarships can have a life-long impact. Scholarships are essentially “free” money for college, and they will help you to graduate with the least amount of debt possible.

So where do you start? How do you know which scholarships to apply for?

Scholarships are available through a variety of channels and a high school counselor can help you find some of the best scholarships to apply for. No matter where you look for scholarships, there will be chances for you to earn free money for college.

The easiest place to find scholarships?

Get a summer job (yes, it’s still possible!)

Despite what it seems, summer 2020 isn’t cancelled. Searching for a job right now might be a little tough but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

Keep in mind that many companies are still taking applications, and some are interviewing remotely in an effort to use this time to identify solid candidates, so don’t hesitate to apply if you see a viable position. Just know you may need to follow up and be patient with the process.

In the meantime, here are a few things you CAN do:

  1. Expand your references: brainstorm more potential connections you could make and update your reference page.
  2. Update your resume: review NCU’s Resume, Cover Letter, References and LinkedIn guide to create or update your resume.
  3. Expand your knowledge: consider joining a professional association or group that adds value with little cost.
  4. Develop your skills: is there a certification, seminar, or webinar you would benefit from to prepare you for a future job? Many companies are offering free or reduced pricing for digital courses and seminars right now, so it may be the perfect time to take advantage.

Choose a college in your price range

While college isn’t cheap, it is a lifelong investment. But every college has a different price tag. Just like any other major purchase, it’s a good idea not to shop outside of your price range. Two similar colleges might have vastly different prices.

But don’t assume that the “sticker price” is the actual cost of attending any university. You will also likely have an opportunity for scholarships and financial aid. Some universities, like North Central, offer an academic scholarship for all students. Check out our Net Price Calculator to see how scholarships can affect the cost of college and see the actual cost of attendance.

Be persistent and don’t give up

All four of the options above require you to put yourself out there and be active about your college finances. Explore every avenue and learn all that you can about the process, and you will be set up for success by saving for college now-even during COVID-19.
