In the midst of Covid-19, what can you do to find a summer job?
Searching for a job right now might be a little tough at the moment but that doesn’t mean it is impossible!
Keep in mind that many companies are still taking applications, and some are interviewing remotely in an effort to use this time to identify solid candidates, so don’t hesitate to apply if you see a viable position. Just know you may need to follow up and be patient with the process.
In the meantime, here are a few things you CAN do:
Expand your references
Brainstorm more potential connections you could make and update your reference page.
Update your resume
Review NCU’s Resume, Cover Letter, References and LinkedIn guide to create or update your resume.
Expand your knowledge
Consider joining a professional association or group that adds value with little cost.
Develop your skills
Is there a certification, seminar, or webinar you would benefit from to prepare you for a future job? Many companies are offering free or reduced pricing for digital courses and seminars right now, so it may be the perfect time to take advantage.
Develop your LinkedIn profile
Review and update all of your information, including your skills and endorsement section. Schedule time on LinkedIn each week to invite those you know to be a part of your network.
Set up your CareerWire account
NCU students and alumni have access to CareerWire, our online job and internship board (P.S. we now have a mobile app).
Practice interviewing
Practice your interviewing skills with a friend over a video chat, with Career Services (especially a Zoom interview).
Pinpoint your strengths
Knowing your strengths can be helpful when creating your resume and interviewing for jobs. You can find out your 5 key strengths at Strengths Finder – for just $20 you can get a code, take the assessment and a summary will populate for your review.
Stay connected
Be intentional to stay connected and use this opportunity to reach out to others you haven’t talked to in a while. They all are a part of your network!
Current students and alumni can contact Judy Winship in NCU’s Career Services by emailing jwinshi@northcentral.edu for questions and assistance with their summer job search!
