North Central University hosts Super Bowl guests

Super Bowl law enforcement personnel use NCU for staging area

Increased law enforcement presence in the area of Downtown’s North Central University related to Super Bowl staging, not emergency

MINNEAPOLIS (Jan. 25, 2018) — The Minneapolis Police Department and North Central University (NCU) would like to inform community and media members that people will notice an increased law enforcement presence in and around the university, beginning today. There will be a visible and noticeable presence of officers and law enforcement partners in the area of East 14th/15th Street near Chicago and Elliot Avenues starting today through Feb. 5.

These are the teams providing security for the Super Bowl and are on campus for staging activities. The officers and security professionals in this area are most likely NOT responding to an emergency or incident during this time period.

The MPD, on behalf of all law enforcement agencies, would like to thank North Central University for entering into a contract with the Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee to support security operations.

“The assistance of our partners in the private sector is crucial to the success of our security operations. The MPD, and all the other agencies working to provide a safe and festive atmosphere for the Super Bowl, cannot perform our necessary functions without the help of our friends. North Central University’s generosity is a good example of how these partnerships help us operate,” Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said.

The majority of NCU students and employees are away on break, as the school has suspended regular operations during Super Bowl week. Additionally, a “Super Bowl Task Force” consisting of NCU employees across several areas of the university has been meeting at North Central since early March 2017 to plan for a successful experience for law enforcement. Teams from NCU have met monthly with the Minneapolis Police Department to ensure all facility requirements for the staging operation are met.

North Central University President Scott Hagan commends the cooperative work between Minneapolis Police, NCU, and the Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee. “This is an outstanding example of public-private partnership. North Central has a lot to offer the Minneapolis community and we have been delighted to work with several members of the Minneapolis Police Department to help set the stage for safe Super Bowl events that will bless the thousands of visitors coming to our city.”

Although law enforcement will be utilizing North Central facilities and be present in the Elliot Park area through Feb.5, the work of the agencies working there is specifically in support of Super Bowl-related functions and activities. Citizens are encouraged to use regular channels, e.g., calling 9-1-1, for any situation requiring emergency assistance.
