Position Purpose

The Residence Life Graduate Assistant (GA) will serve as a critical member of the Residence Life team overseeing our on-campus apartment community and assisting with critical projects throughout the year. As the GA of Residence Life, this position will lead a team of student leaders (Assistant Resident Director, Discipleship Administrator, Resident Advisors, and Life Group Leaders), mentor students, mediate roommate conflicts, and provide educational programming to apartment residents and the broader campus community.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Typical Duties

(70%) Oversight of NCU’s apartment community

  • Lead NCU apartment students by providing educational, spiritual, and social programming, conflict mediation, and overseeing moves into and out of campus housing.
  • Oversee Apartment RAs by initiating one-on-one mentoring, weekly in-hall team meetings, and on-going team development.
  • Oversee Senior Programming by working with the Apartment Community In-Hall Team or advising a senior programming student organization.
  • Share in RD on-duty phone coverage roughly four times a semester for a week at a time.
  • Contribute to the student conduct process – conducting investigation meetings with students, participate in Conduct Review meetings with fellow RDs, drafting decision letters, eRezLife tracking, etc.
  • Participate in roommate conflict conversations

(30%) Assist with seasonal projects

  • In conjunction with another Resident Director, plan and execute January Residence Life Training for Residence Life student leaders.
  • Assist during the spring housing season by working closely with the Assistant Dean of Housing in hosting, leading, and mediating housing conversations and placing students in their fall housing.
  • Assist with Apartment Selection Night during the spring semester

Job Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree is required. All GA’s must be enrolled in NCU Graduate level courses.

  • Ability to work in supervisory, collegial, and/or mentoring relationships with others, including staff, faculty, and students
  • Knowledge of, and ability to fully use, technological resources including a wide variety of computer programs and applications
  • Experience and competence in working with diverse populations is preferred
  • Ability to handle confidential information
  • Ability to communicate and follow up verbally and in writing to ensure shared understanding of accurate information
  • Ability to deal with conflict resolution in a professional manner
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and conflicting priorities to accomplish tasks efficiently and accurately
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and independently
  • Skill and ability to input data accurately and efficiently
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds, reach, and lift above the head

Working Conditions and Frequency:

Equipment and Tools

Use of a PC and telephone, photocopier and facsimile machine approximately 80% of the workday

Environmental Conditions

Exposure to repetitive motion of the fingers, hands and wrists on a daily basis

Work is performed in a Christ-centered urban environment
