University Procedure
The university identifies and puts in place reasonable accommodations through an interactive process between the university and the student.
Step 1: Initiate the Request
- Who to Contact: A student must ask for an accommodation from either the appropriate administrator (like an instructor or department head) or the campus pregnancy accommodation coordinator (the Title IX Coordinator).
- Privacy Option: A student does not need to share medical details with an instructor and can choose to work directly with the coordinator to maintain privacy.
Step 2: Engage in the Interactive Process
- Discussion: The administrator who receives the request will either set up the accommodation or start a good-faith talk with the student.
- Goal: The purpose of this discussion is to find an effective and reasonable accommodation that meets the student’s needs.
- Facilitation: The campus pregnancy accommodation coordinator is available to help with this process and ensure a fair conversation.
Step 3: Implement the Accommodation
- Implementation: The administrator will put the agreed-upon reasonable accommodation in place.
- Denial Protocol: If a request is denied because it is found to be unreasonable (for example, it would fundamentally change a course), the administrator must first talk with a knowledgeable group and the Title IX office. The administrator must also be ready to explain the specific reason for the denial.
